Prior to 1998, there were relatively little or no roles for gay characters in film and television. Further, it was uncommon for gays and lesbians to be positively represented in the media. In the last decade, the representation and the roles for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people have changed tremendously. The current textual analysis of prime-time sitcoms is intended to identify the growth and development of scripted content for lesbian gay, bisexual, transgendered, and queer (LGBTQ) characters in comedies known to have reoccurring LGBTQ characters. Specifically, this analysis evaluates the verbal messages related to the general dialogue, sexual comments, romantic comments, and general humor of characters in 20 episodes of two NBC sitcoms from the 2017 season. Implications of the media effect on audiences in which the character‘s intersectionality is acknowledge and unpacked using humor are discussed.","PeriodicalId":146178,"journal":{"name":"REVIEW OF JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131828431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, drawing on the work of Johan Galtung that locates the media in a vortex of the State, Capital and Civil Society, this study problematizes the phenomenon whereby civil society elements in the Northern Region of the West African nation attenuate media freedoms through violence and intimidation of media workers. Adopting the point of departure that freedom of the press is necessary for the proper functioning of Ghana‘s burgeoning democracy, this study, through interviews with radio station management and staff, confirms that radio stations in the Tamale metropolis of the region adhere to a self-censorship regime as a result of this phenomenon, with inimical consequences for the health and integrity of the public sphere. This study therefore expands the discussion of media censorship beyond the more popular paradigms of State or Capital dominance over the media. While this study confirms the existence of the phenomenon of Civil Society censorship of media, it suggests a failure of the State to guarantee the safety of broadcasters in the Tamale metropolis. It also suggests a weakness of the journalists‘ association at the national level to advocate on behalf of members who face violence and intimidation in the course of their duties at the regional level in Tamale.","PeriodicalId":146178,"journal":{"name":"REVIEW OF JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125249481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the case of this study, I investigate the ideology of „alibrāliyah‟ 1 in the Saudi socio-political context. „Alibrāliyah‟, corresponding to liberalism in English, is a loanword to Arabic that started to be contested recently amongst opposing groups who attempt to charge it with their own ideological meaning. This article presents a framework designed for examining the diachronic construction of the ideology of „alibrāliyah‟ at macro and micro levels. This combines Corpus Linguistics methods with Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) and Discourse Theory (DT). The framework is employed by examining the discourse of „alibrāliyah‟ in a corpus of Saudi newspaper articles (575 articles) that discuss mainly „alibrāliyah‟ over the period (2007-2016). The analysis of the articles has revealed that „alibrāliyah‟ is mainly associated with the discourse of religion and the discourse of human rights in which it shifts from being associated with the religious discourse to the discourse of freedom. This shift in meaning represents the success of liberals to establish their identity in the Saudi society.","PeriodicalId":146178,"journal":{"name":"REVIEW OF JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125575433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this paper is to investigate the extent to which digital technologies offer new opportunities to improve people‟s social lives, transcending barriers and experiencing, in this particular case, a digital mutation. The interaction between factors of social and cultural differentiation for this population gives rise to specific kinds of choices and life changes. This exploratory study argues that digital mutation responds to the interaction of this population‟s social factors and digital experiences by combining new social experience / new digital actions and is framed within two parallels: the motivation experienced as a group which makes them transcend barriers and consequently they put digital literacy into practice; the second parallel is between resilience -that empowers them, gives them confidence- also represented as a digital inclusion. The sum of both parallels are the factors that predefine in this population a digital mutation.","PeriodicalId":146178,"journal":{"name":"REVIEW OF JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125309449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
