Aimed at both popular and scholarly audiences, the beautifully illustrated essays in Risking theAbstract nicely balance academic research and theoretical sophistication with accessible writing, offering those unfamiliar with the history of Mexican art a carefully constructed context for Gerzso's work. Gerzso (1915-2000) made a career as a set designer for theater and film and painted in his spare time as a young man, devoting himself full-time to painting following his retirement from the film industry in 1962. Although his geometrically abstract paintings placed him on the periphery of Mexico's art scene, several critics of Latin American art have written extensively on his work, including Luis Cardoza y Aragon, Octavio Paz, John Golding, Marta Traba, and, more recently, Rita Eder and Dore Ashton. I All these authors discuss Gerzso's paintings in terms of their relationships to landscape, architecture, the pre-Columbian, Surrealism, Cubism, and the erotic (particularly with regard to Gerzso's use of the grieta, or \"crevice\"). They portray Gerzso as an artistic loner who was nevertheless an agent of change for Mexican painting. The four essays in Risking theAbstract draw on this existing body of literature but also introduce important new lines of thought and investigation. Luis-Martin Lozano discusses previously unknown works that reveal Gerzso's early affinity for the social realist 123 art journal aesthetics of the Mexican School; Diana du Pont argues for a close link between Gerzso's mature work and Abstract Expressionism; Cuauhtemoc Medina explores the \"IndoAmerican Gothic\" in Gerzso's work; and Eduardo de la Vega Alfaro discusses Gerzso's scenographic work and its relationship to formal elements in his painting. In the catalogue's first essay, \"Gerzso: His Formative and LearningYears,\" Lozano traces Gerzso's artistic evolution from his earliest works, made in the United States while he was a set -design student at the Cleveland Play House in the mid1930s, to his early engagement with Surrealism in the 1940s. The essay outlines Gerzso's early biography, including his birth in Mexico to European immigrant parents, his education in Switzerland in the home of his art-dealer uncle, his return to Mexico, and his years","PeriodicalId":145048,"journal":{"name":"Capitalism and the Dark Forces of Time and Ignorance","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116506111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
