In this paper, we propose SOAP, a system framework for <u>s</u>cheduling <u>o</u>nline d<u>a</u>tabase re<u>p</u>artitioning for OLTP workloads. SOAP aims to minimize the time frame of executing the repartition operations while guaranteeing the correctness and performance of user transactions. It models and groups the repartition operations into repartition transactions, and then mixes them with the normal transactions for holistic scheduling optimization. SOAP utilizes a cost-based approach to prioritize the repartition transactions, and leverages a feedback model in control theory to determine in which order and at which frequency the repartition transactions should be scheduled for execution. When the system is under heavy workloads, selected repartition operations would piggyback onto the normal transactions to mitigate the repartitioning overhead. We have built a SOAP prototype on top of PostgreSQL and running at Amazon EC2, and conducted a comprehensive experimental study validating SOAP's significant performance advantages.","PeriodicalId":137810,"journal":{"name":"Industry papers","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114921077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a major limitation of these services is that they tend to consume significant power due to the usage of power-hungry GPS receivers. This paper proposes Virtual GPS, a middleware layer that provides current location to the applications in a power efficient manner using our novel cross layer approach. A number of mechanisms such as GPS, WiFi signatures[14], crowd sourcing, mobility tracking, etc. can be used to determine the current smartphone location. All these mechanisms differ from one another in terms of their power consumption and location accuracy. Virtual GPS requires higher level applications to indicate the desired location accuracy, e.g. low, medium or high, and then chooses the mechanism that satisfies the desired location accuracy with minimum power consumption. A prototype of Virtual GPS has been implemented. The paper describes the design and implementation of this prototype, and provides an extensive evaluation that includes lab-controlled settings as well as real world settings.\u0000 Primary contributions of this work is in energy-efficient location estimation by considering application's accuracy requirements and dynamically switching sensors based on estimation algorithm in Virtual GPS layer. Another contribution of our V-GPS layer is to provide location to multiple applications simultaneously from stored location data instead of sampling sensors when the location errors accumulated satisfies application's accuracy requirements. We evaluate our approach using multiple experiments in moderate mobile and highly mobile environments. Results and evaluations show that Virtual-GPS layer can save over 28% compared to direct sensor usage with least overhead.","PeriodicalId":137810,"journal":{"name":"Industry papers","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117266165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

X-Flex is intended as an alternative to the Dominant Resource Fairness (DRF) scheduler currently employed by both YARN and Mesos. There are multiple design differences between X-Flex and DRF. For one thing, DRF is based on an instantaneous notion of fairness, while X-Flex monitors instantaneous fairness in order to take a long-term view. The definition of instantaneous fairness itself is different among the two schedulers. Furthermore, the packing of containers into processing nodes in DRF is done online, while in X-Flex it is performed offline in order to improve packing quality. Finally, DRF is essentially an extension to multiple dimensions of the Fair MapReduce scheduler. As such it makes scheduling decisions at a very low level. X-Flex, on the other hand, takes the perspective that some frameworks have sufficient structure to make higher level scheduling decisions. So X-Flex allows this, and also gives platforms a great deal of autonomy over the degree of sharing they will permit with other platforms. We describe the technical details of X-Flex and provide experiments to show its excellent performance.","PeriodicalId":137810,"journal":{"name":"Industry papers","volume":"464 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125822077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of enterprise IT environments, a rapid and accurate discovery of complex infrastructure dependencies at the application, middleware, and network level is key to a successful migration to the Cloud. Existing migration approaches typically replicate source resources and configurations on the target site, making it challenging to optimize the resource usage (for reduced cost with same or better performance) or cloud-fit configuration (no misconfiguration) after migration. The responsibility of reconfiguring the target environment after migration is often left to the users, who, as a result, fail to reap the benefits of reduced cost and improved performance in the Cloud. In this paper we propose a method that automatically computes optimized target resources and identifies configurations given discovered source properties and dependencies of machines, while prioritizing performance in the target environment. From our analysis, we could reduce service costs by 60.1%, and found four types of misconfigurations from real enterprise datasets, affecting up to 81.8% of a data center's servers.","PeriodicalId":137810,"journal":{"name":"Industry papers","volume":"170 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130458657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, these applications perform place discovery and recognition in an isolated manner with very little coordination and collaboration with each other. This approach is inhibiting for the application developer as well as the endmobile user, as former has to write redundant and undesirable code for place discovery and the latter's device is subjected to redundant sensing, processing, storage, and higher energy consumption.\u0000 In this paper we present a novel framework PMWare, which is a middleware that caters to place and route sensing needs of 3rd party applications in a unified and integrated manner. It provides an end-to-end service from sensing user's location to discovering high-level location attributes while providing interfaces for managing and storing large-scale human mobility patterns. PMWare handles the energy-accuracy tradeoff and uses triggered-sensing approach to reduce battery consumption. To demonstrate the end-to-end working of our middleware, we developed an application PlaceADs that uses place visiting history of a person to push relevant advertisements. We deployed this application among 16 participants in real-world to check the effectiveness of PMWare.","PeriodicalId":137810,"journal":{"name":"Industry papers","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116937959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
