A waveform generator was used to simulate temporal light modulation waveforms for this evaluation. The generated waveform was used as the waveform reference and was measured using three representative data acquisition systems with resolutions of 24 bits, 16 bits, and 8 bits. The temporal light artefacts quantities, the short-term flicker index, PstLM, perception modulation, Mp, and stroboscopic effect visibility measure, SVM, of the reference waveform and three measured waveforms were calculated and compared.","PeriodicalId":137378,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the CIE Symposium on Advances on the Measurement of Temporal Light Modulation","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129941385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Zuber","doi":"10.25039/x49.2022.p10","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.25039/x49.2022.p10","url":null,"abstract":"The requirements for a measurement device regarding the detection of temporal light artefacts are complex in many ways. In this work, we investigated the effect of aliasing and its impact on SVM and Pst. For a suitable measurement device, an anti-aliasing filter is essential, but the right choice of such a filter involves the consideration of many factors. Very important is the correct adjustment of the sampling frequency with respect to the transmission of the anti-aliasing filter. Filter type, filter order and cut-off frequency in combination with the chosen sampling frequency are directly related to measurement errors. In addition, not only the measurement itself, but also the calculation of quantities like SVM and Pst can introduce errors to TLA results. For the evaluation of SVM for instance, a Fourier transformation of the signal is necessary. To avoid or minimize errors in the frequency detection, common signal processing techniques can be applied. We examine the use of zero-padding (nulling) and windowing on the input signal before an FFT is performed. With the right choice of these techniques, we increase the reliability of the results. These techniques cannot be applied directly to the evaluation of Pst, since this calculation is done in the time domain. Nevertheless, we show that advantages in terms of reliability and measurement duration can be achieved by moving to the frequency domain (Fourier transformation).","PeriodicalId":137378,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the CIE Symposium on Advances on the Measurement of Temporal Light Modulation","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127696339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technique is commonly used in many applications to extract small, modulated signals buried in noise that could not directly be measured otherwise. In most lighting products, temporal light modulation is usually a periodic fluctuation of the light output resulting from the power supply. Lock-in detection is inherently well-suited to the characterisation of these optical oscillations superimposed to a large luminous background. Different methods of lock-in detection are applicable to photometric and spectroradiometric measurements in the presence of temporal light modulation: electrical lock-in detection with a lock-in amplifier, digital lock-in detection based on synchronous sampling, and purely optical lock-in detection. The practical implementations of these methods are detailed, illustrated, and compared. Their respective advantages and drawbacks are presented in the case of photometric and in the case of more complex measurements based on array spectrometers and imaging photometric instruments. New applications enabled by temporal light modulation are given.\"","PeriodicalId":137378,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the CIE Symposium on Advances on the Measurement of Temporal Light Modulation","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127010583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To characterize a TLM measurement instrument, some indices and relevant measurement procedures can be learned from current CIE publications for photometers measuring time-averaged luminous quantities. However, as the fast and time resolved photometric data is captured, other more characteristics of TLM measurement instrument need to be addressed. In this paper, the characterization linearity, frequency response and noise properties and their of the TLM measurement instrument was studied. Considering the actual application, quality indices were proposed based on traditional appraising metrics, and the measurement procedures were developed correspondingly. Furthermore, several TLM measurement instruments were measured, and the results showed fine applicability of these quality indices.","PeriodicalId":137378,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the CIE Symposium on Advances on the Measurement of Temporal Light Modulation","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129645467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The metrics, however, are not easily calculated, and occasionally the values change depending on sampling rates. This study investigates the complexities involved in processing data from TLM waveform metrics and then calculating metrics. It explores the sensitivity of each metric to sampling rate, and recommendations are then provided for how to increase the accuracy and consistency of the metrics by using appropriate sampling rates. The analyses in this study are based on noise-free and stable ideal waveforms; however, sampling rate effects also exist for real-world waveforms.","PeriodicalId":137378,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the CIE Symposium on Advances on the Measurement of Temporal Light Modulation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126999531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, artificial lighting properties, such as flickering due to light modulation, influence nocturnal insects. This research describes the development of a novel measurement device that can control the flickering frequency, luminous flux and correlated color temperature (CCT) of an LED light box. This to evaluate the impact of artificial light modulation on insects. A case study has been developed using four identical setups that were placed on the university campus. For each setup, the flickering frequency can be varied (f = 0 Hz, 80 Hz, 120 Hz, 150 Hz) while other parameters are unchanged. When an insect is detected, an image is taken which allows further determination. In this paper, descriptive statistics on the number of detected insects are presented. The results of the prototype and measurement setup are promising for further research in different areas of biology.","PeriodicalId":137378,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the CIE Symposium on Advances on the Measurement of Temporal Light Modulation","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134298961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An investigation of the achievable uncertainty under application of zero-padding and quadratic interpolation for peak finding is performed. This is done for sinusoidal and square verification waveforms outlined in IEC TR 63158 and demonstrates that using the referenced Stroboscopic effect visibility measure toolbox gives deviations from the reference values of up to 2.2%. Applying a combined optimised method of zero-padding and quadratic interpolation deviations less than 0.05% are achieved and yielding consitent. Result over different sampling frequencies. The verification waveforms are generated on a programmable light modulator and measurement results are shown.","PeriodicalId":137378,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the CIE Symposium on Advances on the Measurement of Temporal Light Modulation","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133241130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
