Medication non-adherence results in increased morbidity, mortality and financial loss among patients and non-adherence is multifactorial. This study therefore was aimed at determining factors associated with non-adherence to drugs and dietary regimen among Type II Diabetes Mellitus patients attending University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria. This study utilized a quantitative design using descriptive survey method to collect data from 330 Type II diabetes out-patients in UCH, Ibadan on factors associated with non-adherence to drug and dietary regimen. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics (frequency, mean and standard deviation) for research questions and inferential statistics, Chi-square and ANOVA for testing hypotheses at 5% level of significance. Findings revealed that non-adherence to medication mean was 3.4±1.1 and 27.7% of respondents had poor adherence to medication. Mean attitude to medication non-adherence was 12.0±2.2 and 62.0% respondents had negative attitude to medication adherence. Clinical factors like: not being able to access clinic regularly for consultation and not getting medication information had influence on anti-diabetic medication non-adherence (1.37±0.49; F=42.036; P=0.000) and 1.54±0.50; F=29.431; P=0.000) respectively. Individual factors like: not being comfortable with physician diagnoses (1.33±0.47; F=22.190; P=0.000); found it difficult in taking their drugs when they are many (1.46±0.50; F=42.992; P= 0.000); receiving detailed written instruction regarding exercise programs from healthcare provider (1.43±0.50; F=23.485; P=0.000) were all influencing factors to anti- diabetics medication adherence. Lack of patients-physician relationship and inconsistent information about the medicines prescription influences non-adherence to anti-diabetic medication greatly in this study. The study specifically assessed the level of illness-perception among people living with diabetes mellitus in Benin-City. This study adopted descriptive cross-sectional method. The sample for the study was obtained from the total population of Nine hundred and sixty-eight (968), using Slovin’s Formula. The instrument used for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire which consisted of two sections. Internal consistency method was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. The reliability of the instrument was calculated using Cronbach’s Alpha which yielded coefficient value 0f 0.813. Data collected from respondents through questionnaire were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results showed that the respondents demonstrated high level of illness- perception with mean scores of; perceived susceptibility 4.05± .939, perceived severity 3.76± 1.112, perceived threat 3.89± 1.107 and perceived benefit 3.60± 1.077. Result also showed that 66.7% of participants had high level of ill-perception. The study concluded that respondents have high illness-perception which is likely to inform them about specific diabetes self-care management actions. It was recommended that there was need for nurses to continuously educate patients on characteristics of the diabetic disease that seems severe, symptoms of DM that interfere with their activity, complications that may occur due to diabetes and complex treatment rules.","PeriodicalId":130837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Dentistry, Diabetes, Endocrinology and Oral Hygiene","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126423592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the past three decades, hyper-transfusion therapy in these patients has shown significant increase in life expectancy and quality of life. unfortunately, this type of therapy also increased the frequency of complications due to iron overload. The study aims to identify the Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with thalassemia, and to assess transfusion related complication among them. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in Thalassemia Center in Al-Najaf province in Iraq, during the period from the 1st of April to the 31st of August 2018. Data were collected through direct interview with patients/parents using a specially designed questionnaire form. A total of 175 transfusion dependent thalassemia major patients were included, the mean age 10. 5 years ranging from 5 m to 34years. Patients under 10 years of age represented the highest rate with Male: Female ratio 1.2:1. 60% were from rural area with high percentage of parental consanguinity (70%). The study documented the relationship between iron over load and appearance of complications. Development of preventive measures as genetic counseling, prenatal diagnosis, pre-marital screening are the best ways to decrease the incidence of disease, in addition to regular blood transfusion with optimum chelation therapy.","PeriodicalId":130837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Dentistry, Diabetes, Endocrinology and Oral Hygiene","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121594466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
