The anthropology of landscape challenges all of these ideas. By sharing and observing local lives through ethnographic fieldwork, anthropologists have realised that landscapes matter deeply to people: they care about the landscapes they inhabit, materially shaping them and attaching meaning to them. Anthropologists have come to argue that people do not only live in landscapes but also through them: landscape is an intrinsic part of, or even actor in human social and cultural lives, constructed by them both physically and symbolically and, reciprocally, helping to make and unmake relationships and identities.","PeriodicalId":127742,"journal":{"name":"Approaching Historical Sources in their Contexts","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124848345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a building from which one can look out for 360 degrees to north Africa, the border with Portugal and other mountain-top communities, and it is a landmark that can be seen at distance by others - friends and enemies. It was a mosque, converted into a church, back into a mosque and fortress again, and in 1505 became the Church of the Incarnation in the village of Casares. Casares was the birthplace of the twentieth-century political activist for Andalucian self-determination, Blas Infante Perez, and the church, de-sanctified after it became derelict following the Spanish Civil War, was converted into a cultural centre, named after the ‘father of Andalusian nationalism’. This chapter traces the changing uses of the building and its changing role in defining and describing place. Now that this area of Spain relies so heavily on tourism, does the building as an edifice which encapsulates the region’s history retain its cultural capital?. © 2020 selection and editorial matter, Sarah Barber and Corinna M. The main focus is on the interplay between the spatial, temporal and associative contexts of war memorials, and how the historian can explore these. Memorials both define and are defined by their locations. Where some memorials are seen to complement and be complemented by their environment, others exist in tension with their surroundings and generate controversy. Inadvertent juxtapositions can have an unintentional impact on how a memorial is read. The dialogue between memorial and location is thus examined in both geographical and discursive contexts, with specific examples drawn from Coventry, London and Staffordshire in the United Kingdom, as well as from Berlin and New York. © 2020 selection and editorial matter, Sarah Barber and Corinna M. These techniques have been documented and taught. In contrast, the focus of this paper is the use of digital surrogates as an alternative for loss compensation of graphic works using digital images and high quality printers. By employing this method, the lost design is reconstituted without compromising the artist’s original intent. The process of producing a digital surrogate will be explained using a case study of a recent treatment of Jacques Callot’s The Siege of La Rochelle, a monumental print from sixteen plates. While producing a facsimile image might seem relatively simple, there are several details in production that can be adjusted to produce a high quality surrogate. Using digital images from a complete print for the reproduction, two methods of production were identified: printing the appropriate design on a paper similar in quality to the original and printing the illusion of paper texture, color and design on a high quality inkjet optimized paper. This paper will focus the techniques used for the final digital surrogate with a discussion on image capture, digital manipulation, paper selection, and surface coatings.","PeriodicalId":127742,"journal":{"name":"Approaching Historical Sources in their Contexts","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132818711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
