To manage smart grids operations a detailed knowledge of the power demand is necessary. The paper describes the energy data analysis and the basics of the mathematical modeling of the energy demand. A detailed analysis of the structure of load profiles is conducted on the basis of the load data of the power transmission network in Germany. Regression methods and artificial neural networks are used as forecast methods. The paper shows the integration of the forecast tools into energy management systems.","PeriodicalId":126203,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Energy and Sustainability Conference (IESC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121486378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We introduce a multi-producer multi-consumer congestion model of a power supply network, where production and transmission costs depend on the congestion in corresponding nodes and arcs of the network graph. The consumer goal is to meet their energy demand by purchasing energy from multiple suppliers while minimizing costs. We formulate the cost minimization problems for energy consumers with the assumption of constant-per-unit profit for energy producers. By adding a fictitious node to the graph with arcs toward the supplier nodes, we can formulate a networking game with a single source and multiple destinations. We apply multicommodity atomic routing methods and results to this system model in order to investigate the existence, the uniqueness and the efficiency of Nash equilibria for certain classes of cost functions. The efficiency is established in a simple example of this framework with a star-shaped network topology. Finally, we discuss possible extensions of the model.","PeriodicalId":126203,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Energy and Sustainability Conference (IESC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133813947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper develops a model for controllable load scheduling in a smart home using GRASP. The developed model seeks to maximize the available energy from distributed resources in order to use less power supplied by the distribution network. Thus, the Home Energy Management System can make decisions about the most appropriate periods to turn on controllable loads based on the model developed in this work. A typical residential user in the area of Sao Paulo (Brazil) which has strong solar radiation and a significant contribution of wind speed was established as study case. The charging and discharging batteries profile presented an interesting performance, showing the capabilities of such system to reduce peak loading on the distribution network. The development of a simplified model for scheduling the most appropriate moments for turning on a controllable load is the original contribution of this work.","PeriodicalId":126203,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Energy and Sustainability Conference (IESC)","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113965824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper significant increases in both the application of photovoltaic systems for power generation and the application of electrically driven heat pumps for heat generation are taken into consideration. Different solutions to overcome the grid congestions are investigated. Out of plenty of possible energy storage solutions this paper concentrates to the application of thermal energy storage (hot water) together with heat pumps due to the significant price advantage of thermal energy storage against electricity storage. Further investigated solutions are the integration of e-mobility and the application of demand side management. Within this research project grid infrastructure of the German city of Cologne has been investigated towards its suitability to cope with the energy transition process and it was found that there exists almost no limitation in most areas. In this paper the results of the investigation of a district dominated by multi-family houses with a heating surface area of 13,800 m2 and a school building are presented. The results show that some restrictions occur without implementing the further smart-grid measures. Concerning the integration of electrically driven heat pumps into the existing grid infrastructure without thermal energy storage only 45 % of the district could be supplied. However, the heated district area doubles (90.6 %) with the integration of thermal energy storage. Photovoltaic system installations can be increased by 78 %, representing an increase from 195 kWp to 347 kWp by the application of demand side management. Further, the paper presents the results from integrating electric cars and its charging infrastructure into the selected grid. Comparison for random and controlled charging is provided taking low load conditions and high solar irradiation into account. Additionally, stationary battery storage is investigated.","PeriodicalId":126203,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Energy and Sustainability Conference (IESC)","volume":"254 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121287822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This boost converter is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and the results are presented under different transient conditions. The simulation shows that the output voltage maintains in its desired value as long as the converter operates in continuous current mode operation. However, the system encounters the output voltage instability due to mode change from continuous to discontinuous current operation modes. Therefore, two distinct control methods are designed in order to maintain the output voltage in a constant desired value under the mode changing condition. First method is a closed-loop control with a pure integrator in the feedback path. The second one is the mode-change control method. This controller uses a calculating unit to find the proper duty ratio based on the value of the output current. In fact, this unit follows two different amounts of duty ratio for continuous and discontinuous modes. The results illustrate that the application of both controllers could properly control the output voltage and prevent its instability in discontinuous current operation modes. In addition, advantages and disadvantages of each method are presented and their comparison is discussed.","PeriodicalId":126203,"journal":{"name":"2015 International Energy and Sustainability Conference (IESC)","volume":"83-84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123811960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
