{"title":"CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD): HOW IN-SERVICE EFL TEACHERS SEE MENTORING AS A RELEVANT TECHNIQUE","authors":"Asri Purnamasari","doi":"10.20319/dv4.0118","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.20319/dv4.0118","url":null,"abstract":"Mentoring has been widely applied to professional development practices in many areas, including education. In Indonesia, mentoring has not been implemented as a way of collaborative CPD for EFL teachers. In the United Kingdom, for instance, mentoring has become one of the required ways for teachers to learn from each other and support other teachers. By using a qualitative exploratory study, teachers’ views toward mentoring as a relevant technique to in-service EFL teachers will be explored. The data was collected by using a semi-structured interview to investigate in-service EFL teachers. The findings showed different participants’ views on mentoring as a relevant technique to in-service EFL teachers’ CPD. Most of the teachers found that mentoring would benefit experienced teachers to refresh and update their practices, as well as support novice teachers. It is also found that mentoring could give mutual benefits for EFL teachers who teach in different institutions and places. However, this study found that mentoring at the same time has some limitations related to the need for professional teachers to become mentors. Moreover, teachers are already busy with teaching and administrative stuff. Thus, some recommendations related to further study for the implementation of mentoring as a relevant technique to in-service EFL teachers’ CPD are presented.","PeriodicalId":111251,"journal":{"name":"Docens Series in Education","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114577383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main purpose of this study is to predict Malaysian Polytechnic lecturers who teach Wireless Communication subject, on their acceptance level of incorporating Augmented reality into learning material using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The questionnaire was distributed to 40 polytechnic lecturers who teach this subject nationwide. Pearson Correlation analysis using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used to test all the hypotheses. The data analysis indicates that about 87.5 % of Malaysian polytechnic lecturers who teach wireless communication subject currently accept to incorporate AR in that subject. Using Technology Acceptance Model, the study reveals that lecturers perceived that Augmented Reality is easy to use (PEOU), and useful (PU) and therefore has a positive attitude (ATU) towards using it. This results in positive behavioral intention (BI) to use AR in their teaching and learning material for this subject. This study emphasizes on TAM model to understand and explain behavioral intention to use Augmented Reality among Malaysian polytechnic lecturers who teach wireless communication subject. However, the scope of this study can be widened by investigating the acceptance level for other subjects too.","PeriodicalId":111251,"journal":{"name":"Docens Series in Education","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132319992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Student-centered learning (SCL), a teaching-and-learning (TnL) method, is being adopted in the system to develop students' inclinations and higher thinking capacity, revealing individuals' talents in a certain sector meanwhile, 2U2i and work-based learning (WBL) study modes were established to lessen students' reliance on traditional learning by emphasizing particular industrial in-field learning and continuous learning. The purpose of this study is to verify the reliability and validity of the instrument that will be used to determine the efficacy of SCL in 2U2i and WBL programs among participating local higher education providers (HEP) aside from confirming the existence of SCL elements within the programs. The initial data collection procedure involved questionnaires with students as well as industry players with whom the students are currently affiliated. The results suggest that the instrument used is viable and easily understandable by respondents. However, it is insufficient to formulate a truly effective instrument due to the small sample size and differences in the implementation of 2U2i and WBL programs, suggesting a complete data collection involving all related parties in future studies.","PeriodicalId":111251,"journal":{"name":"Docens Series in Education","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127283181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, it aimed to determine the problems encountered by the learners when they are exposed to activities that promote productive struggle. This study utilized the quasi-experimental pre-test post-test design. It has been found out that productive struggle is extremely influential to 21st-century learners for it has helped them to be motivated in managing to improve their skills in mathematics. Furthermore, it was found out in this study that the problem that most of the learners encounter when they are in productive struggle is the fact that they cannot finish the activity within a given amount of time. Findings revealed that there is a significant difference in the achievement test scores of the learners with and without activities that promotes productive struggle. In addition, it has also been found out that there is a significant interaction between the achievement test scores of the learners in the experimental group if they will be classified according to their mental capacity. Therefore, independent learning using activities that promote productive struggle is found to be more effective than the conventional lecture method.","PeriodicalId":111251,"journal":{"name":"Docens Series in Education","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116369699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study we aimed to show how paper dictionary is rather beneficial and provides long-lasting knowledge when studying a second language. To ensure the accuracy, we involved 105 EFL sophomores of the same level, studying professional English in Mandakh University, and used mixed methodology of quantitative and qualitative data analysis such as interview, notes, focus group, and observation. We conducted a survey to identify the use of paper dictionaries in the classroom. There was also a memory test, which was taken from the students, to investigate how students encode, store, recall, decode and forget the given words. The result of the survey identifies that looking up a word in an e-dictionary takes only a few seconds, and the words are stored in short term memory, while using a paper dictionary allows the learner to recite the word multiple times in their mind or mouth and the whole process takes usually a minute. Taking a longer time to look up for a word helps the user to memorize the word in their long-term memory, in this paper we have tried to prove this theory with proper research.","PeriodicalId":111251,"journal":{"name":"Docens Series in Education","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129517017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
