We explore the potential of combining these established practices with interactive enactment of executable prototypes that is widely used in UI prototyping and model-based interactive system design. Based on these fields, we develop the concept of process elaboration through scaffolded virtual enactment. The proposed concepts are instantiated in a web-based tool that enables to explore the potential of the approach. An initial exploratory study could confirm that the approach is considered supportive by end users and can be used to elaborate existing process models or develop models of work process from ground up.","PeriodicalId":104185,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Conference on Subject-oriented Business Process Management","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117320867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But, executing business processes with conventional business process engines is complex, and so people rely on services such as email, where processes naturally emerge from the users' interactions. Instead of relying on the typical centralized and monolithic architecture of business process engines, this work shows, that a decentralized approach utilizing the Actor Model and Intelligent Business Objects (IBOs) is also feasible. Using the Actor Model, the process engine is distributed on several smaller independent actors, which enables a high flexibility. But instead of needing to store process configurations on actors to execute a process, the process configuration is stored in an Intelligent Business Object, which is passed around by the actors for each process instance. As a proof-of-concept, a prototype has been developed.","PeriodicalId":104185,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Conference on Subject-oriented Business Process Management","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128273132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent trends like the Internet of Things, Cyber-Physical Systems, Industry 4.0 or the Physical Internet aim to apply Information and Communication Technology in order to improve organizational performance and ensure competitive advantage. These attempts aim to further integrate the physical and digital world in order to enable communication and collaboration among different organizational actors (people, machines, and even things) and among diverse organizations in real-time. In the logistics domain the increasing digitization is reflected in the Physical Internet initiative. This paper investigates which role S-BPM could play in the Physical Internet. Thereby, previous S-BPM research in the context of Industry 4.0 is discussed with respect to its applicability for designing and implementing aspects of the Physical Internet. Furthermore, an extended S-BPM modeling approach is presented and applied in an application example for smart parcel distribution. Finally, an implementation strategy targeting S-BPM implementations in the Physical Internet is sketched.","PeriodicalId":104185,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Conference on Subject-oriented Business Process Management","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134017514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems aim to enforce employees to perform work in a certain way, executing tasks in a specified order. However, the execution strategy may change over time, leading to expected and unexpected changes in the overall process. Especially the unexpected changes may manifest without notice, which can have a big impact on the performance, costs, and compliance. Thus it is important to detect these hidden changes early in order to prevent monetary consequences. Traditional process mining techniques are unable to identify these execution changes because they usually generalise without considering time as an extra dimension, and assume stable processes. Most algorithms only produce a single process model, reflecting the behaviour of the complete analysis scope. Small changes cannot be identified as they only occur in a small part of the event log. This paper proposes a method to detect process drifts by performing statistical tests on graph metrics calculated from discovered process models. Using process models allows to additionally gather details about the structure of the drift to answer the question which changes were made to the process.","PeriodicalId":104185,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Conference on Subject-oriented Business Process Management","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116826221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Researchers and practitioners are confronted with a multitude of new terms which refer both to well-known as well as to new ideas for the digital transformation within process-oriented organizations. Based on a qualitative literature study, this article explores three current trends of BPM (social-, data-, and case-driven BPM). A comprehensive content analysis of recognized conference proceedings examines which modern catchword is part of which of these three current trends. The discussion of single as well as grouped catchwords demonstrates that the consideration of trend categories may explain the facets of digitalization. To summarize, the consequent consideration of modern BPM trends and new catchwords sets many important technical and methodological impulses for smart solutions, products, services and processes.","PeriodicalId":104185,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Conference on Subject-oriented Business Process Management","volume":"29 25","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120948396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Asthese tools target not only non-disruptive execution of process models but also intuitive ease of use, stakeholders could expect effective and efficient implementation support of business processes. In the presented study we have challenged 3 stakeholder-centered tools refining, validating, and executing a complex process model. We wanted to knowhow much effort needs to be spent when a prototypical applicationis generated from a process specificationprovided by theinvolved stakeholders. The tools were a commercially available suite, a tool currently approaching the market, and a research tool. Our assessmentstudy reveals substantial effortthat needs to be spent for refining and validating process models, before being able to generate an interactive process experience. Hence, (S-)BPM tool developers are encouraged tosupport stakeholders according to the identified needs.","PeriodicalId":104185,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Conference on Subject-oriented Business Process Management","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114608806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is based on task models for subjects and a team model for representing the results of the cooperation. This model can be considered as communication model in the sense of S-BPM. Tasks in the team model have triggers for starting and finishing them. The triggers are the result of task executions in instances of models of subjects. A very restricted notation of OCL is used for those purposes. The same kind of simple OCL expressions can be used to specify preconditions of tasks. Tasks in the team model cannot be executed directly. They only present the result of other models. However, team models can also restrict the execution of other models. Additionally, context definitions are introduced for task models. Within a certain context, variables can be bound to specific values. This allows a very detailed description of activities that is more precise than most workflow specifications. Communication can be restricted to certain instances of subjects.","PeriodicalId":104185,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Conference on Subject-oriented Business Process Management","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124858263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This ninth edition was dedicated to 'Smart BPM for a Smarter World' and according to its tradition, it brought together researchers, educators, practitioners, and consultants. The event put an emphasis on novel approaches to value creation in cyber-physical systems that leverage BPM technology, and S-BPM in particular. Smart cities, integrated (inter-)enterprise value chains, smart energy and smart transport systems are just a few of the fields where BPM can make a difference. Besides this focus, S-BPM ONE invited contributions from all pertinent topics as usual.","PeriodicalId":104185,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Conference on Subject-oriented Business Process Management","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115107451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Being able to assess a modeler's skill level, however, provides valuable input for planning further educational interventions or allows for upfront estimations of capabilities to successfully perform a real-world modeling task. Literature indicates that skill levels can be estimated based on the capability to identify mistakes in given models. We propose to use the metrics specified in the 3QM framework as a foundation for assessing technical modeling skills. Based on these metrics, we have developed testing items for assessing modeler's capabilities to recognize syntactic, semantic and pragmatic issues in models, which serve as an indicator for their modeling skill level. These items are embedded in a computerized adaptive testing platform, which uses item response theory to estimate skill levels. We introduce the testing platform and finally describe the implementation of our test system prototype, which demonstrated the technical feasibility of the chosen approach.","PeriodicalId":104185,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Conference on Subject-oriented Business Process Management","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127410323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
