This study adapts a usage-based account of relative clause acquisition in Turkish. A corpus based on three databases including 170 recordings of naturalistic mother-child interaction was analysed. The age of children in these three databases are 02;00-03;06, 01;00-02;04 and 00;09-02;09, respectively. The analyses revealed that the use of relative clauses in both the children’s productions and in child-directed speech were extremely scarce. Though previous research underlined the linguistic complexity of \u0000relative clauses as a reason for late acquisition, the results of this study point out that scarcity of input should also be regarded as a powerful predictor. The study underlines the availability of other constructions that are functionally parallel to relative clauses. The findings suggest that such structures which are syntactically and morphologically less complex than relative clauses are common in both child directed speech and in children’s productions.","PeriodicalId":102002,"journal":{"name":"Dilbilim Araştırmaları","volume":"2013 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128748976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Turkic syntax known to us from written sources of different periods displays an unusually high degree of stability. Many of the basic typological features of Old Turkic syntax as manifested in inscriptional texts (in so-called Runic script) are also characteristic of modern Turkic. Though they are spread over a huge geographical area, the Turkic languages spoken today also show a relatively high degree of syntactic similarity. In view of these facts, a rewarding object of research would seem to be the notion of a Turkic syntactic type', characterized in positive and negative terms, i.e. as sets of typical and non-typical features.","PeriodicalId":102002,"journal":{"name":"Dilbilim Araştırmaları","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128345351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, 52 eight graders from middle classes have been given two stories from where 225 referents have been taken from the dialogues in order to test the children’s comprehension competence of the referents and the data have been analyzed by t-tests and ratio tests. The fi ndings indicate that the children cannot be said to have comprehended the referents well. In terms of the types of the referents, the children seem to have understood anaphoric and cataphoric referents better than exophoric referents The fi ndings also show that the female children have understood functional referents better than the male children. Therefore, authors who write for children should give importance to the use of referents so as to help the comprehension competence of children.
