The system contains several stages: caption extraction, caption identification, content recognition, and model-indexing decision stages. A superimposed caption in the baseball videos is extracted using a multi-frame averaging technique. After extracting the caption, the caption is identified into one of the caption types. The corresponding caption model including the size, position and meaning of each caption content is used to segment the content of the caption accurately. According to the information of the change of the caption content, a novel model-indexing decision approach is proposed to detect and classify the highlight events of the baseball videos. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is very efficient to classify the highlight events. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed approach can be improved with 14% over the rule-based approach.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130898685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plurality is important to ensure innovation through a mix of competition and cooperation between market actors. Supporting such a system, this paper proposes an open framework for integrating new products with existing home automation equipment consisting of two parts: An upgradeable heterogeneous network infrastructure and a method for describing embedded devices. The infrastructure consists of a scalable distributed gateway architecture that provides data communication between different types of network. Using generic communication modules, that encapsulate communication technology, the infrastructure and legacy products can be upgraded to take advantage of the latest data-communication technologies. To enable services and allow semi-automatic system configuration, devices entering the framework must provide a device descriptor written in a device description language comprising a syntactic interface description part and a semantic description part. Using natural language components vendors can now describe new innovative features that are not yet supported in any standard. A concept prototype using a number of different wireless technologies has successfully shown that is it possible to control devices with no prior application protocol knowledge using components from natural language as common language for translation.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132906311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these techniques require a large size of the frame buffer to shorten the response time of the liquid crystal. In this paper, we propose an improved block truncation coding (BTC) that can significantly reduce the memory used for the overdrive. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the compression ratio by a factor of two while maintaining the edge preservation characteristics as compared with the conventional BTC algorithm.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132144972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ECMA-368 is the Physical (PHY) and Media Access Control (MAC) backbone of many of these wireless devices. WPAN devices tend to operate in an ad-hoc based network and therefore it is important to successfully latch onto the network and become part of one of the available piconets. This paper presents a new algorithm for detecting the Packet/Fame Sync (PFS) signal in ECMA-368 to identify piconets and aid symbol timing. The algorithm is based on correlating the received PFS symbols with the expected locally stored symbols over the 24 or 12 PFS symbols, but selecting the likely TFC based on the highest statistical mode from the 24 or 12 best correlation results. The results are very favorable showing an improvement margin in the order of 11.5 dB in reference sensitivity tests between the required performance using this algorithm and the performance of comparable systems.","PeriodicalId":378486,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115499219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
