Die Beibehaltung der englischen Bezeichnung Disabihty Studies ist hier wie dort sinnvoll, weil sie der Selbstbeschreibung eines eigenständigen angloamerikanischen Diskurses, dessen universitärer Institutionalisierung sowie der Nähe der Disziplin zu den Cultural Studies Rechnung trägt, die sich u. a. in der Vernetzung einer gesellschaftskritischen Forschung mit sozialen Bewegungen zu erkennen gibt. Das Buch von Markus Dederich will in die „Theorieund Diskussionslandschaft\" der Disability Studies einladen und deren „Kernthemen\", „Sichtweisen\", „Modelle\" und „Theorien\" erschließen (lOf.). Während das erste der sieben Kapitel eben diesem Anspruch folgt, indem es das Forschungsfeld genealogisch rekonstruiert und dabei einen profunden Überblick über die wichtigsten Argumentationslinien der Debatten von den 1970er Jahren bis in die Gegenwart mit zahlreichen einschlägigen Literaturhinweisen gibt, zielen die weiteren darauf ab, neben und mit einer detaillierten Darstellung einzelner Positionen entlang ausgewählter Themen eine spezifisch kulturwissenschaftliche Perspektive der Disability Studies abzustecken bzw. diese zuallererst herzustellen. Inwiefern der Begriff der Kultur Ausgangspunkt und Bezugsrahmen dieses Unterfangens ist, wäre deutlicher herauszustellen. Der „Entwurf einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektive\", der aus fraglichen Gründen als Unterabschnitt des ersten Kapitels „Disability Studies\" vorgestellt wird, referiert zwar Begriffe und Theorien, die (auch) in den Kulturwissenschaften zum Einsatz kommen (vom symbolischen Interaktionismus bis hin zur Mentalitätsgeschichte, vgl. 32-42), eröffnet aber keine Theorie der Kultur mit einer bestimmten Sichtweise auf den Gegenstand Behinderung. Entsprechend vage bleibt die Unterscheidbarkeit der nicht selten in einem Satz genannten sozialen, gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Konstruktionshorizonte von Behinderung. Im Fortgang der Lektüre wird jedoch schnell ersichtlich, dass ein seit Längerem als transdisziplinär zu bezeichnendes Konzept der Kulturwissenschaften Foucaults Diskurs als erkenntnisleitender Metabegriff fungiert. Er transzendiert die Systematik des Buches, das seine Kapitel den drei Großüberschriften „Theorie\", „Repräsentationen\" und „Konstruktionen\" zuordnet.
