To accomplish this in a flexible and a cost-effective manner, priority classes for the different services are commonly used. The authors study priority queueing schemes implemented in a statistical multiplexer with shared and separate buffers, whose input consists of superposition of voice and data traffic. A performance comparison is given for two buffer access schemes: the common nested threshold cell discarding (NTCD) with single shared buffer and NTCD with multiple buffers (NTCD-MB). The arrival process to the multiplexer is approximated using a Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP). It is shown that when implementing the NTCD-MB priority scheme, the parameters of the switching node can be adjusted in such away that the service quality is guaranteed for different classes of traffic. Tokens are generated periodically. Assuming geometrically distributed ON and OFF periods, the system is analyzed by means of a generating functions approach. A method for calculating the exact steady-state distributions of the data-buffer and the token-pool occupancies as well as the cell waiting times in the leaky bucket is presented. Also, a technique to derive the joint probability generating function of two consecutive interdeparture times at the output of the traffic shaper is described. From this pgf, closed-form expressions can be obtained for the variance of the interdeparture times and the correlation between two successive interdeparture times. This paper describes the SDH networks at NTT and the newly developed SDH 52M/156M digital cross-connect system (Module AX), which enables real-time VC-3/VC-4 path level network operation and hit-less switching, thus providing support for relocation of existing telecommunication cables through cross-connection at the VC-3/VC-4 level. Both voice and packet switched data are considered. The data services employ a slotted ALOHA-type of code division random access protocol. Concerning the channel and modulation, Nakagami fading takes place on BPSK, or on DBPSK modulated data. An analytically tractable and simple model based on the D and R/sub 0/ parameters is employed on the many to one link i.e. the reverse link in a wireless environment. Both queueing delay and channel delay analysis on data terminals are presented. The performance of these codes are compared with the (2,7) and (1,7)RLL codes which are designed for a continuous servo format. Variable bit rate sources are adequately assessed with two new concepts: the bit rate increase per unit time (acceleration-rate=/spl alpha/ bit/sec/spl and/2) or the bit rate increase ratio (acceleration-ratio=exp(/spl beta/)). The dimension of the acceleration-ratio coefficient /spl beta/ is seconds/spl and/-l and the upper limits /spl alpha/ and /spl beta/ are regulated to guarantee the network's QoS. The proposed concepts allow the network state to be accurately estimated and so avoid congestion. In particular, the use of a satellite backbone communications link whose channels are dynamically assigned to the network stations is investigated. Each station supports packetized voice and data message streams. Incoming streams to a station are statistically multiplexed by the station across the backbone channels currently allocated to this station. To enhance the multiplexing process, a variable bit-rate packet-voice encoding scheme is also employed. Stations issue periodically requests for backbone channel allocations, based upon their loading status. We introduce two distinct algorithms for allocating the shared backbone channels to the stations. We develop analytical methods for the analysis and design of such integrated multiplexing/multiple-access networks. Performance measures include voice and data packet delays and packet blocking probabilities. Voice stream performance is also characterized by the average number of bits per sample used by the voice encoding scheme. The fairness issues between the two allocation algorithms are described and discussed. In channel states where the fading is moderate, the code rate is high thus providing increased throughput. In channel states where the fading is more severe, a low rate code is used to provide the necessary error protection. Retransmission requests used by hybrid-ARQ error control are incorporated into the Viterbi decoder following a modification proposed by Yamamoto and Itoh (1980). The decision to change code rates is made by a sequential statistical test which monitors the frequency of retransmissions. The property states that among all output channels, the one labeled with a binary number i can be made the most likely recipient of the packets associated with the codeword c/sup i/ which is defined as the bit reversal pattern of i. The property also states that no other packets with a different codeword appear at this channel with a greater probability. A sufficient condition for this property to hold is for the probabilities at the input to be certain permutations of each other. Using this property, a convenient addressing scheme is presented for assigning channel groups in the SDF when the input probability is uniform. Determination of the presence of such signals can be performed by radiometer-based intercept receivers that detect the signal's presence by measuring received power. However, conventional intercept receivers often fail when they operate in the presence of narrow-band interference because of their inability to differentiate between jammer and DSSS signal energy. An intercept receiver which employs wavelet transform domain-based excision is described. The receiver detects BPSK DSSS signals in the presence of narrow-band interference by employing adaptive interference rejection techniques to suppress the interference before measuring power. The improvement in the system performance over that of conventional radiometric detection only is shown by presenting numerical simulation results in the form of receiver operating characteristics.
