However, to improve the network efficiency and QoS support of MEC systems, it is essential to jointly optimise edge resource management, IoT data collection and IoT device association in the context of heterogeneous services and edge resources. In this study, we address these challenges by formulating the resource allocation, device association and data routing problem in a multi-cell MEC network as a mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. We also propose a best-fit greedy heuristic method to determine an approximate solution to the optimisation problem for online resource management. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm compared to three alternative benchmarks.","PeriodicalId":330785,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125850019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The recent W3C Web of Things (WoT) standards aimed to ease the deployment of heterogeneous systems by introducing uniform and well-defined software interfaces among the systems’ components. Although the WoT reference architecture is generic and agnostic to the target devices, its widespread adoption depends on the availability of specific tools named Servients, which enable the run-time operations of WoT applications. In this paper we aim at contributing to the adoption of the W3C WoT standards by presenting WoT Micro-Servient (WMS), a framework for bringing the WoT paradigm to the extreme edge of an IoT environment. Through WMS, developers can design, compile and install WoT applications on micro-controllers and embedded systems with constrained hardware capabilities. We describe the architecture and functionalities of the tool, and demonstrate its effectiveness in terms of reduced latency and energy consumption compared to the state-of-art proxy-based solution enabled by Node-wot, i.e. the official implementation of W3C WoT. Finally, we discuss a real-world application related to smart home, where WMS is used to enable a WoT-based remote monitoring and control of indoor plants, by enabling seamless integration between micro-controllers and mobile devices.","PeriodicalId":330785,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132103593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes DA-BERT to employ pre-trained BERT with domain adaptive training and newly proposed dynamic masking probability to deal with knowledge selection in KTDS. Domain adaptive training minimizes the domain gap between the general text data BERT is pre-trained on and the dialog-knowledge joint data; and dynamic masking probability enhances the training in an easy-to-hard mode. Experimental results on the benchmark dataset show that our proposed training method outperforms the state-of-the-art models with large margins across all the evaluation metrics. Moreover, we analyze the bad case of our method and recognize several typical errors in the bad case set to facilitate further research in this direction.","PeriodicalId":330785,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131007962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These applications rely on the assumption that a simple network of vehicles can be extended with more complex and powerful network infrastructure, in which several Road Side Units (RSUs) are employed to achieve application-specific goals. However, this assumption is not always satisfied as in many real-world scenarios it is unfeasible to have a conspicuous deployment of RSUs, due to both economic and environmental constraints. With the aim to overcome this limitation, in this paper we investigate how the only Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications can be effectively exploited to share data among the vehicles about an event of interest, such as vehicular traffic. In this sense, we propose a novel communication schema based on the Population Protocol model that allows vehicles to be efficiently updated about a given event. Experimental analysis aims to evaluate the performance of the proposed schema, while also highlighting the benefits it might bring in VANETs applications.","PeriodicalId":330785,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132435315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such a scenario, the company support service may take advantage of a dynamic coupling and interaction among the Cloud, mobiles (as personnel-borne equipment), and IoT devices (as bolt-on addition to the, possibly legacy, CPE). For this purpose, a software architecture for the collection and transmission of metrics of interest through a combined system, featuring a Cloud instance and a mobile-based agent, has been implemented. The reference architecture is composed of IoT-Cloud and edge/mobile devices, specifically smartphones and embedded boards, the latter equipped with a Cloud-controlled agent as a software component, with the goal to collect useful metrics from hardware devices of an energy substation, as a way to support remote and on-site diagnostics through technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy. We present the reference architecture, its implementation, and some preliminary results on the effectiveness of the proposed solution.","PeriodicalId":330785,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP)","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121960191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This led to the development of IT platforms that allow to monitor the marine environment and provide a number of services to different kinds of final users, whether they are private individuals interested in the status of the seas, or companies whose business depends on the marine environmental monitoring. The main limitations of current platforms are due to such a difference between free trials, which often focus only on specific aspects of deep waters, and subscriptions, which provide analyzes whose reliability is generally not proportional to the costs. This paper presents SmartWave, a project funded by Regione Sicilia (European Regional Development Fund), that aims to develop a novel IT platform to observe and predict phenomena that characterize the marine environment, while also providing the consumer with a unified portal to collect, access and analyze marine-related information. To achieve this goal, one of the main challenges of this project is to aggregate and standardize heterogeneous data from multiple sources in order to offer very accurate information to private or business consumers.","PeriodicalId":330785,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP)","volume":"220 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134523362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

NICU monitors various kinds of vital signs. Among them, there is a strong demand for an accurate and sophisticated technology to monitor respiration rate (RR) and detect critical events such as apnea. Existing solutions for RR monitoring either rely on the indirect measurements from thoracic impedance or other invasive techniques posing discomfort and risk of infections to babies. Also, multiple wire loops lying around babies hinder the delivery of parental and clinical care. Motivated by this need, we have designed an Internet-of-Things (IoT) based smart textile chest belt called \"Baby-Guard\" to monitor RR and detect apnea. The Baby-Guard is a neonatal wearable system consisting of a sensor belt, a wearable embedded system, and an edge computing device. The sensor belt consists of textile-based pressure sensors and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). The wearable system consists of a microcontroller equipped with wireless connectivity and power management. The edge computing device (ECD) connects with the wearable system through an MQTT networking architecture. ECD hosts signal processing and computing services to extract RR and detect apnea. We conducted simulation experiments using a high-fidelity, programmable NICU baby mannequin. We found an average error of 0.89 BrPM in breathing rate and ~97 percent accuracy in apnea detection. Computation and communication latencies were found to be ~66 and 22 ms, respectively. The Baby-Guard showed potential to be a wireless infant monitoring system in the NICU settings.","PeriodicalId":330785,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133162818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
