The present application example is the substitution of the conventional central computer aircraft fuel management system, with a new distributed network of smart sensors and actuators, capable of eliminating the need of a central computer. This paper is devoted to recent experimental studies about the performances of the distributed system. In this stage of the research it is interesting to confirm the correct operation of the control system for normal and abnormal fuel system conditions. An important aspect is to take a detailed note of the activity in the fieldbus. Another aspect is to confirm that the dynamic reconfiguration possibilities of the new distributed system, thanks to the smart components, do work in abnormal conditions. The case under study in this paper is more complex than the helicopter case taken initially as reference, now it is an airplane fuel system with six tanks in the wings and a tail tank","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114954631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is especially true in the development of safety-critical software. As a result, the embedded industry has been far from the goal of making reuse a standard practice in software development. A new policy issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) promises to create a major shift in how software is reused in safety-critical systems. A reusable software components advisory circular published in December 2004, called AC 20-148, details the approach and documentation necessary for systematic reuse of software components that meet the guidelines of RTCA/DO-178B. To fully appreciate the value of a reusable software component (RSC), one must understand the history of safety-critical software standards and development. A brief overview of safety-critical software development and the RTCA/DO-178B standards is given as well as an overview of the Advisory Circular 20-148. A place where we step from the darkness of a purely ground based air traffic control system and into the light of a network centric environment (NCE) which enables the distribution of air traffic management. As we cross over the terminator that divides the old from the new we must take with us the lessons of the past as we employ new technology to meet the needs of the end users. Many of the rules and regulations used today were designed to ensure the safety of a system that could not produce the situational awareness achievable with today's technologies. Applications like Oceanic In-Trail Procedures and Tailored Arrivals that are enabled by a NCE start the industry on a path which takes lead to a fully integrated National Airspace System (NAS). To maintain safety and make additional responsibility for pilots possible the new technologies must also enhance the pilot's situational awareness. How these NAS modernization technologies are implemented into the cockpit is just as important as which ones are employed. To merit implementation new technologies need to bring a clear and distinct improvement in operational capability to the cockpit. Operationally relevant research needs to be completed before these new technologies can be implemented. If NASA Aeronautics refocuses its research effort back to basic science approach there is a significant risk that gap form between where NASA research efforts end and where development of applicable technologies picks up. This gap in the development of technologies occurs at point that is beyond the capabilities of commercial enterprises to address. If the research community withdraws from conducting operationally relevant research at a time when the airlines are hamstrung by competition our nation's aviation industry and the traveling public suffer","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129040727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assuming a net-centric operation (NCO) that provides a mechanism to inform all users of weather forecast information, hazardous weather constraints, and weather avoidance routing requirements, the future ATM system can move away from static jet route routing toward a system where routes are defined dynamically, adjusted during the course of the day as required by traffic demand and the geometry of severe weather constraints. This service is achieved by the interaction between autonomous, distributed agents (e.g. airports, air traffic control and airlines) that operate under a high degree of uncertainty (e.g. weather, economy). As a consequence, the overall speed of and reliability of this mode of transportation is determined by the collective interaction between these agents and the impact of uncertainty in the system. This paper describes a methodology and the results of an analysis of the degree of uncertainty in trip time reliability on a single congested-hub to congested-hub route (Atlanta - Chicago O'Hare). The analysis identified that the actual gate-to-gate trip time varies by up to 30% of the average trip time. The analysis also identified systemic schedule padding of 16 minutes on this route, and statistically significant differences between the trip time in the summer, winter and fall/spring, between time-of-day, and between narrow-body and regional jets. The implications of these results on airlines strategies and passenger experience are discussed","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"181 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124537957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, for many useful problems, there are classes of PDEs where the computational requirements are prohibitively large and enormously time consuming. Because of this, only very small models can be resolved at an engineer's workstation and even then, this method is only acceptable when significant delays can be allowed. For larger problems, or if delays are unacceptable, the PDE solution must be obtained by submitting the work to a queue for a remote cluster of processors. However, for the largest and most complex problems, even the shortest run time on a cluster results in processing times of many days or weeks. This paper describes a high performance computing (HPC) desktop design that could be used to solve the highest time demanding types of PDE problems by fusing together: 1) an appropriate group of multiple reconfigurable networked computing nodes joined with 2) adapted parallel processing algorithms, where both the hardware and the algorithms are synthesized against 3) a particular PDE problem class of interest","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124539261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is in stark contrast to the concept behind the global information grid (GIG). Watkins","doi":"10.1109/DASC.2006.313747","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/DASC.2006.313747","url":null,"abstract":"Integrated modular avionics (IMA) present many benefits in power and weight savings for an aircraft, but also create new challenges for verification due to the increased complexity in interactions between the highly integrated network of avionics systems. For a large set of hosted avionics functions, it is impractical to exhaustively test an entire set of functions while they are fully integrated. There can be a combinatorial explosion of test cases for an integrated IMA system since the performance and function of a hosted system can be impacted by other hosted systems. This traditional test approach would be characterized by a high cost of change since any single system change could require the full integrated set of systems to be retested. This paper introduces a modular verification strategy for IMA systems, which provides a practical approach to verifying these architectures. Within the modular verification strategy, systems are verified in isolation from the fully integrated set of avionics systems. This can be done without requiring re-test within the fully integrated environment. In order to accomplish this, terms of equivalency must be established for an avionics system's test environment with respect to the integrated system environment. This equivalency relies on reasoning in the logical system domain rather than the physical system domain. This is a fundamental change in reasoning from traditional verification concepts employed within federated architectures. The cost of change is minimized since each hosted system can be tested and retested without impacting the test results for other hosted systems. This proposed verification strategy is based upon the author's experience in developing the Genesis IMA architecture at Smiths Aerospace. The Genesis IMA architecture was implemented on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner as the common core system (CCS). The CCS is one of the first implementations of an \"open systems\" IMA architecture","PeriodicalId":443824,"journal":{"name":"2006 ieee/aiaa 25TH Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126806799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
