Catalog records from six college libraries are collected and a survey is conducted to understand the local users’ information requirements for the catalog. Places, where libraries have scope to improve and which divisions of tags could be more helpful for them in information retrieval, are identified and suggested. This study fulfilled the need for local-level assessment of the catalogs.Keywords: Catalogingquality assessmentcollege librarieslibrary catalogsMARC 21MARC tagscatalogs of Assam AcknowledgmentThe authors acknowledge the respondents in the survey for their consent, time, and valuable input during the survey.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Statement of declarationIt is to certify that the authors have no affiliations with, or involvement in, any organization or entity with any financial or non-financial interest in the subject matter or materials discussed in this manuscript. The Nuovo soggettario Thesaurus is in compliance with ISO 25964: 2011-2013, IFLA LRM, and FAIR principle (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability). Its open data are available in the Zthes, MARC21, and in SKOS formats and allow for interoperability with l library, archive, and museum databases. The Thesaurus’s macrostructure is organized into four fundamental macro-categories, thirteen categories, and facets. The facets allow for the orderly development of hierarchies, thereby limiting polyhierarchies and promoting the grouping of homogenous concepts. This paper addresses the main features and peculiarities which have characterized the consistent development of this categorical structure and its effects on the syntactic sphere in a predominantly pre-coordinated usage context.","PeriodicalId":45054,"journal":{"name":"Cataloging & Classification Quarterly","volume":"61 1","pages":"708 - 733"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44375737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consistent application of faceted vocabularies, specifically Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT) and Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms (LCDGT), would enhance the discovery of these resources. Alternatives to special cases in Subject Heading Manual H 2187 are proposed. A case study demonstrating the application of LCDGT is provided. Figures illustrate the results of the proposed best practices. The article includes four tables that are designed to streamline term assignments. To facilitate the discovery of resources with important provenance characteristics, the Marion E. The selected terms focus on features that have historically been of interest to visitors. The addition of these headings in the bibliographic records allows users to use these keywords to conduct a search or narrow their results, resulting in more flexibility to locate and select the resources that best meet their needs.","PeriodicalId":45054,"journal":{"name":"Cataloging & Classification Quarterly","volume":"61 1","pages":"646 - 660"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45186814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Faceted search has been widely implemented in library discovery interfaces and has provided many benefits to library users. The effectiveness of facets in library catalogs depends on a complex interaction between facet vocabularies, metadata quality and structure, and the library discovery interface’s capabilities. This article provides a holistic overview of challenges for optimally implementing facets in library catalogs. This supports a systematic approach to refining and enhancing the capacity of faceted search to improve searching and exploring bibliographic metadata.","PeriodicalId":45054,"journal":{"name":"Cataloging & Classification Quarterly","volume":"61 1","pages":"439 - 490"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2023-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47151731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
