Earlier research focused on advanced economies and destinations where tourism has advanced, with limited literature on case studies within emerging economies. Thus, research on how gender influences residents’ perceptions of regional tourism is limited, implying that we know little in that domain. This paper reports on the findings of ethnographic interviews conducted with selected women participants in Southeastern Nigeria. The findings show no significant impacts of gender on tourism but identified culture, unequal power distribution, and fear of neglect as issues that influence how women perceive tourism in the region. We conclude that the cultural dynamics in destinations within emerging economies can be a dominant variable that influences how residents perceive tourism and should be given more attention, especially in Africa.","PeriodicalId":2,"journal":{"name":"ACS Applied Bio Materials","volume":"49 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141799756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the popularity of Dark Immersive Theatre Experiences (DITE), which combine immersive theatre and darkness. As a result, it has become more important for practitioners and the scientific community to understand the factors that enhance or limit participants' satisfaction. In this study, a qualitative approach was used to identify five critical obstacles to participant satisfaction: the size of the audience, downtime occurrences, the attitude of other participants, unclear instructions, and the conceptual framework of the experiences. Additionally, five key catalysts that enhance participant satisfaction were found: the intensity of darkness, sensations of achievement, the ambience surrounding the experience, the incorporation of theatrical elements, and the presence of game elements. This research provides valuable insights for DITE managers and other practitioners to develop successful future experiences.","PeriodicalId":2,"journal":{"name":"ACS Applied Bio Materials","volume":"49 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141799638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Grounded in a popular delegation of sovereign authority and power (<i>imperium</i> and <i>potestas</i>) to the Roman emperors and subordinate officials, the constitution of hierarchy is pervasively shaped and constrained by law and legal norms, written and unwritten, that orient the lawful exercise of power to the public good; it includes subsidiary democratic mechanisms of petitioning, consultation, and local and provincial democracy. The alternative to the constitution of hierarchy is not political egalitarianism, but an alternative hierarchy of arbitrary and exploitative rule, dominated by an economic and social class of <i>optimates</i>.</p>","PeriodicalId":43537,"journal":{"name":"Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141770276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a comprehensive comparative study of two widely used methods for determining the optimal number of factors in factor analysis, the K1 rule, and parallel analysis, along with a more recently developed method, the bass-ackward method. We provide an in-depth exploration of these techniques, discussing their historical development, advantages, and limitations. Using a series of Monte Carlo simulations, we assess the efficacy of these methods in accurately determining the appropriate number of factors. Specifically, we examine two cessation criteria within the bass-ackward framework: BA-maxLoading and BA-cutoff. Our findings offer nuanced insights into the performance of these methods under various conditions, illuminating their respective advantages and potential pitfalls. To enhance accessibility, we create an online visualization tool tailored to the factor structures generated by the bass-ackward method. This research enriches the understanding of factor analysis methodology, assists researchers in method selection, and facilitates comprehensive interpretation of latent factor structures.</p>","PeriodicalId":43537,"journal":{"name":"Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141770278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, the inclusion of More’s engraving in 16th-century portrait books of distinguished personalities–the so-called viri illustres genre–, contributed to the promotion of the famous English humanist in continental Europe. Soon, More’s integrity and wisdom were extolled not only in works printed in Catholic countries but also in other territories that no longer accepted Rome’s authority. This paper analyses the depiction (both image and text) of the English humanist in all these works. The visual and textual rhetoric of these engravings shows their mutual dependence.","PeriodicalId":35112,"journal":{"name":"Journal of English Studies","volume":"12 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141661672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A recent study has revealed that the order in which variables are read from data can impact the structure of a Bayesian network (Kitson and Constantinou in The impact of variable ordering on Bayesian Network Structure Learning, 2022. arXiv preprint arXiv:2206.08952). However, in empirical studies, the variable order in a dataset is often arbitrary, leading to unreliable results. To address this issue, this study proposed a hybrid method that combined theory-driven and data-driven approaches to mitigate the impact of variable ordering on the learning of Bayesian network structures. The proposed method was illustrated using an empirical study predicting depression and aggressive behavior in high school students. The results demonstrated that the obtained Bayesian network structure is robust to variable orders and theoretically interpretable. The commonalities and specificities in the network structure of depression and aggressive behavior are both in line with theorical expectations, providing empirical evidence for the validity of the hybrid method.</p>","PeriodicalId":43537,"journal":{"name":"Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141510589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study further looked at the influence of information technology, and renewable energy, on financial development. The bound test result confirms the existence of a long-term relationship among the variables. This study first uses the nonlinear autoregressive distributive lag (NARDL) model to capture the asymmetry that arises from positive or negative components of natural resource rent. The empirical evidence of the NARDL estimation shows that natural resource rent negatively influences financial development; meanwhile, corruption control boosts financial development and positively moderates this relationship in the Nigerian context. This confirms the existence of a natural resource curse. The results further explained that both information technology, renewable energy, and corruption control enhance financial development. Furthermore, the causality test discovers that there exists a bidirectional causal relationship between financial development and the scrutinized variables. These findings offer valuable policy recommendations for policymakers.</p>","PeriodicalId":43537,"journal":{"name":"Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141510591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
