Advances in Cellobiose Dehydrogenases: Molecular Modifications and High-Throughput Screening for Biotechnological Applications
Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH), a key biomass oxidoreductase, holds significant potential for applications in fields such as straw feed, biofuels, and bioelectrochemical sensors. However, the limitations of natural CDH in terms of catalytic efficiency, substrate specificity, and stability have hindered its widespread industrial application. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the structure, classification, and catalytic mechanism of CDH. Special attention has been given to progress in molecular engineering approaches such as rational design and high-throughput screening. Moreover, this review discusses future directions, such as the interplay between CDH and cellulases, self-mutagenesis-driven evolution, and innovative high-throughput screening strategies. The aim is to offer valuable insights for further studies and potential applications of CDH, ultimately advancing industrialization processes in fields such as straw feed and bioelectricity.
