SUPRAS-based generic sample treatment for determination of twelve regulated mycotoxins in five food commodity groups
A generic sample preparation method based on supramolecular solvents (SUPRAS) was developed and combined with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to determine twelve regulated mycotoxins in five food commodity groups. The SUPRAS was produced by coacervation of 1-hexanol in a water-tetrahydrofuran (THF) mixture. The extraction and clean-up were combined into a single step, thanks to the restricted access properties of the SUPRAS. The procedure was simple (only required sample stirring and centrifugation) and significantly reduced solvent consumption (0.8 mL of THF per sample). Method quantification limits ranged 0.03–23.95 ng/mL for each of the mycotoxins/food sample combinations. Repeatability, within-laboratory reproducibility, and trueness values ranged 3–20 %, 3–18 %, and 69–115 %, respectively. The SUPRAS-LC-MS/MS method was fully compliant with EC regulations for all the food categories, regulated mycotoxins, and investigated concentration levels. Thus, it offers a quick, sustainable and cost-effective approach to the routine control of mycotoxins in food.
