Abstract
BackgroundIndividuals in facilities greatly benefit from using power mobility devices (PMDs) to participate in activities of daily living. Therapy practitioners use assessments to evaluate a resident's safety and independence in residential care settings when using PMDs. The Power-Mobility Indoor Driving Assessment (PIDA) is a commonly used assessment in research and clinical settings for the residential care population.PurposeThis study examined the test-retest reliability of the PIDA for older adult PMD users in residential care settings, including individuals who are male and female and individuals with and without cognitive impairment.MethodsA total of 31 participants completed the PIDA on two occasions, with 1 to 2 days between each administration.FindingsThe PIDA has significant test-retest reliability with an intra-class correlation coefficient of 0.93 for older adult PMD users in residential care settings, including males and females and individuals with and without cognitive impairment, when using a single rater.ConclusionThis study supports the continued use of the PIDA by clinicians who desire a free tool to assess a resident's safety and independence of PMD use in a residential care facility.
