Abstract

Leadership and followership are universal features of human social life, yet leadership research has focused largely on describing leader traits and behaviors while giving less attention to their evolutionary origins and functions. This review synthesizes two decades of research through the lens of evolutionary leadership theory (ELT), integrating evidence from psychology, anthropology, biology, and organizational science. It examines why leadership evolved as a solution to recurrent coordination and conflict problems; the psychological, neural, biological, and behavioral mechanisms that regulate leader–follower relations; and how these mechanisms develop across the lifespan and evolutionary history. It further shows how ecological conditions and gene–culture coevolution jointly shape variation in leadership and followership across societies and organizations. By grounding leadership in evolved follower needs, ecological fit, and adaptive trade-offs (e.g., dominance versus prestige), ELT explains when different forms of leadership are likely to emerge, succeed, or fail; why modern organizations are prone to evolutionary mismatch; and how existing leadership theories can be integrated within a broader evolutionary framework.
