Abstract
An integrated understanding of how thermal pretreatment
and solvent
physicochemical properties govern ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE)
of hemp phytochemicals remains limited. This study systematically
investigated the effects of decarboxylation and solvent properties
on extraction selectivity and the development of hemp-infused oil
formulations. Optimized decarboxylation (98 °C, 65 min) maximized
cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol while preserving terpenes. Under
identical UAE conditions, ethanol achieved the highest cannabinoid
recovery, whereas hydrophilic and hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents
selectively enriched phenolic and lipophilic phytochemicals, respectively.
These solvent-dependent behaviors were mechanistically explained by
differences in polarity, viscosity, and surface tension governing
cavitation and mass transfer. The extracted hemp phytochemicals were
subsequently incorporated into hemp-infused massage oil formulations
containing rice bran oil, which exhibited physicochemical properties
comparable to commercial products without synthetic antioxidants.
This work provides mechanistic insights into solvent-controlled UAE
and a transferable framework for plant-derived bioactive compounds.
