Abstract
Fruit development is a key biological process that influences yield, fruit quality, and reproductive success. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in this process remain poorly understood in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) compared with other Solanaceae species, particularly tomato. The interactions between cellular changes, hormone signalling, and genetic regulation during eggplant fruit development have also received limited attention. This review summarizes research to date on the main stages of eggplant fruit development, namely fruit set, cell division, cell expansion, and maturation. At each stage, we discuss cellular changes, changes in endogenous hormone levels, transcriptional regulation, and the roles of genes associated with fruit shape. The review also examines the effects of phytohormones on cellular processes at different stages and the involvement of transcription factor families, such as MADS-box, TCP, MYB, and bHLH, in hormone responses and gene expression. Fruit-shape genes identified through quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and genome-wide association studies are also discussed in relation to the cellular and hormonal processes that affect fruit shape. By considering cellular, hormonal, transcriptional, and genetic regulation together across fruit development, this review brings these aspects together to improve our understanding of eggplant-specific developmental processes and may help guide future breeding efforts aimed at improving yield, fruit uniformity, and quality.
期刊介绍:
Scientia Horticulturae is an international journal publishing research related to horticultural crops. Articles in the journal deal with open or protected production of vegetables, fruits, edible fungi and ornamentals under temperate, subtropical and tropical conditions. Papers in related areas (biochemistry, micropropagation, soil science, plant breeding, plant physiology, phytopathology, etc.) are considered, if they contain information of direct significance to horticulture. Papers on the technical aspects of horticulture (engineering, crop processing, storage, transport etc.) are accepted for publication only if they relate directly to the living product. In the case of plantation crops, those yielding a product that may be used fresh (e.g. tropical vegetables, citrus, bananas, and other fruits) will be considered, while those papers describing the processing of the product (e.g. rubber, tobacco, and quinine) will not. The scope of the journal includes all horticultural crops but does not include speciality crops such as, medicinal crops or forestry crops, such as bamboo. Basic molecular studies without any direct application in horticulture will not be considered for this journal.
