Abstract

Background

Supporting students to identify their values and beliefs helps to shape their professional identity. Faculty can facilitate activities to help students with this process.

Aim

Faculty developed a new teaching activity, the Nursing Philosophy Illustration, to allow for creative expression of the student’s philosophy.

Methods

Using the nursing metaparadigm as the framework, students completed a series of faculty-guided activities to help organize their thoughts and feelings to define their nursing philosophy. Students wrote detailed prompts for the AI generator tool to illustrate their philosophy and provided a brief recorded narration to describe how their values and beliefs will inform their future practice.

Results

Students demonstrated the development of their professional identity through illustration and storytelling. Students and faculty enjoyed the creativity of this assignment.

Conclusion

Finding ways to encourage students’ creative expression of their values and beliefs can be an effective teaching strategy.
