Abstract
Background
Moral distress, exacerbated by the global COVID-19 pandemic, has emerged as a critical concern affecting nurses across varying experience levels and healthcare settings.
Method
Part of a bigger mixed methods design, the study engaged 216 participants in online surveys measuring moral distress, resiliency, and team dynamics in Fall 2023. Qualitative insights are the focus for this manuscript and were gathered through purposefully sampled video interviews with 28 nurses.
Results
Interviews offered nuanced perspectives on the pervasive effects of moral distress during the pandemic and suggested targeted interventions. Participants emphasized the urgent need for educational programs and strategies to enhance team dynamics within the specific challenges presented by the pandemic.
Conclusion
This study highlights the urgency of addressing moral distress in nursing education and practice. Findings support an urgent and substantive revision of current nursing curriculum to better prepare nursing students for the real challenges encountered in the healthcare setting.
