Abstract
Sex hormones shape behavior through diverse mechanisms. In a recent study, Zallar et al. have uncovered a rapid, nongenomic estrogen signaling pathway mediating binge drinking in female mice via membrane-associated estrogen receptor α (ERα) in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST). These findings reveal sex-specific neurobiological underpinnings of alcohol use linked to naturally circulating hormone levels.
