Plasma exchange therapy in ophthalmology

The ocular indication of PEX may be considered to exist in patients with uveitis posterior and Graves' disease. For both types of diseases only anecdotal case descriptions are available; controlled trials are lacking so far. Whereas the results of PEX are generally judged positively for uveitis posterior by all authors, PEX treatment in Graves' disease is debatable.

In myasthenia gravis and Sjögren's syndrome, PEX is generally applied after considerable deterioration of the general clinical status of the patient has occurred. A precise ophthalmologic examination could well be useful for documentation of the course of the disease and the therapeutic response.
