Pagliarini","doi":"10.1016/j.ios.2010.11.006","DOIUrl":null,"url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of postoperative complications after surgical dental extractions in patients with systemic diseases versus healthy patients.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>From January 2007 to December 2009, a total of 220 patients underwent surgical dental extractions (single or multiple: total no. of teeth 388) at the MDO of the University of Ferrara's Sant’Anna Hospital. Patients were divided into two groups: 95 healthy patients, who served as controls, and a study group of 125 patients with one or more systemic diseases (including concomitant diseases).</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>To prevent postoperative complications, antibiotic therapy was administered to every patient. During the 3-year study period, there were 4 complications: 3 cases of late bleeding related to ineffective clotting and 1 case of delayed wound healing.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>The results indicate that complications are more frequent in patients taking warfarin.
