La presente investigacion tuvo tres objetivos principales: (a) estudiar la relacion entre las habilidades sociales y el autoconcepto en estudiantes universitarios pertenecientes a una institucion tecnologica del estado de Jalisco, Mexico, (b) comparar ambas variables segun el sexo de los alumnos, y (c) identificar la fuerza de las dimensiones del autoconcepto en la prediccion de las habilidades sociales. El muestreo utilizado fue no probabilistico incidental y se conformo por un total de 482 estudiantes. Los resultados indicaron que: (a) existe una correlacion media y positiva entre las variables del estudio, (b) existen diferencias significativas por sexo en la puntuacion total del autoconcepto y en los factores emocional, fisico y academico laboral, y (c) mediante un analisis de regresion lineal multiple, se obtuvo un modelo que refiere a los factores emocional, fisico y social del autoconcepto como principales variables predictoras de las habilidades sociales. Con estos resultados se constata la asociacion entre las variables implicadas en el estudio y reafirma la idea de que en las personas (especialmente en los jovenes) el autoconcepto es un aspecto que perfila el desarrollo de sus habilidades sociales y, por ende, de las caracteristicas de su comunicacion interpersonal y su ajuste psicologico al entorno. Finalmente, el estudio recomienda fomentar actividades que incrementen el autoconcepto de las personas y prevenir con ello un posible deficit en sus habilidades sociales.
