An Interpretation of the Russian Financial Crisis

An American economist specializing in the economy of the Russian Federation provides a brief interpretation of developments in Russia since the financial collapse of August 1998, and critiques much of the conventional wisdom that has appeared on the subject. Institutional, cultural, policy, and environmental factors are considered as explanations for the August developments. Selected elements of Russia's economic transition are briefly contrasted with those of other economies in the region, and possible future trends of the Russian transition are considered.
