TOM REEVE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO CANCER CARE

This respected award, offered by COSA, formally recognises a national leader who has made a significant contribution over a relatively long period toward cancer care through research, clinical leadership, and/or community service. The award presentation and recipient's oration highlighting an overview of career achievements will be delivered Thursday 2 November at 1:30 pm.

2005 (Inaugural Award) Professor Tom Reeve AC CBE

Tom Reeve AC CBE was Emeritus Professor in Surgery of the University of Sydney, graduating in 1947. After working in Sydney and North Queensland, he went to Albany Medical College, upstate New York to complete training in General and Thoracic Surgery. In 1958, Prof. Reeve became certified with the American Board of Surgery and in 1967 became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He was Chairman of Surgery at The University of Sydney from 1982 to 1988 and chaired the Northern Sydney Health Area from 1988 to 1996. On retirement, Prof. Reeve became President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and was appointed Executive Officer of the Australian Cancer Network in late 1993. In this role, Prof. Reeve was involved in the development of Best Practice Guidelines in Cancer Management and the development of “Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Early Breast Cancer” for the NHMRC. These were the first evidence-based cancer management guidelines produced in Australia. Tom was a member of the Boards of Management of the NHMRC National Breast Cancer Centre and the National Cancer Control Initiative.

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Tom on August 20, 2023. This year's Tom Reeve Award and oration at the ASM will carry an additional poignancy.

The COSA Presidential Lecture was introduced in 2010 and is an opportunity for our organisation to recognise the contribution of an individual to medical research, and for the COSA membership to be informed of and learn about that individual's work. COSA is delighted that Professor Bogda Koczwara AM has accepted the invitation to present the COSA Presidential Lecture. Professor Koczwara will be known to many COSA members, having held many eminent roles within the organisation, most notably as Past President (2011–2012), Past Chair of the Survivorship Group, and Convenor of the COSA-Flinders Cancer Survivorship Conference.

Professor Koczwara will present an informative and entertaining lecture titled It is all about cancer. Or is it? A fitting way to close COSA's 50th ASM.

Each year COSA offers the “Best of the Best” oral and poster discussion awards. The prizes are awarded in a competitive, independent process and are available across all disciplines. This is a great opportunity to build COSA's global profile and to reward our diverse membership for excellence in contributing to knowledge based clinical cancer care. Awards are given for each of the “Best of the Best” oral and poster discussion categories, based on the content, degree of innovation and importance, and the quality of the presentation.

The “Best of the Best” oral awards are equally valued at $1000.00 in each category. “Best of the Best” poster discussion awards are equally valued at $500.00 in each category.
