One strategy used by large DNA viruses is to encode proteins that mimic cytokines or cytokine receptors, which modulate the activity of cytokines during infection. Poxviruses encode a unique set of proteins that are secreted from the infected cell and function as soluble cytokine receptors or binding proteins and sequester tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-1β, or chemokines.
