Rare case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus intermedius tenosynovitis caused by pet bite: A case report
Background
The Staphylococcus intermedius group, previously presumed to solely afflict nonhuman animals, has garnered increasing attention in light of recent reports documenting human infections. Additionally, the noteworthy propagation of multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus intermedius group has surfaced as a pressing issue within the realm of veterinary medicine.
Case presentation
In this report, we present a unique case of tenosynovitis that arose subsequent to multiple bites inflicted by a feline that had been prescribed antibiotics for pyoderma. The bacterial isolate retrieved from the patient's wound culture was identified as multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus intermedius group, prompting a modification in the individual's postoperative antibiotic regimen to vancomycin, which proved to be efficacious.
Conclusions
For pet bite injuries, Staphylococcus intermedius group or multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus intermedius, a normal flora in animals, should also be considered in medical treatment, given the expected increase in pet ownership and related injuries.
