本文主要讲述越南著名政治家、诗人阮氏赖(13801442)与其妾阮氏罗的爱情故事，以及阮氏罗在故事中对他们爱情的诠释。这个故事在越南非常有名，因为这对恋人的悲惨死亡。作者在其文学幻想中以真实的历史事件和历史英雄为基础，突出了阮氏的孤独和诗人的弱点，与政治家的理性本性相比较。
