Dementia is a clinical syndrome with cognitive impairment interfering with daily activities. Population-based and clinic-based studies have shown mixed results regarding rates of MCI in ET. A handful of studies have looked at development of dementia in ET with differing results. Brain pathology studies in ET and dementia or investigating Alzheimer-type pathology have thus far been unrevealing. There is evidence by some investigators supporting a greater risk of dementia for those having older onset tremor, while those having ET at a younger age faring at least as well as controls regarding risk of cognitive impairment and dementia.
