Improvements on mechanical properties and formability of rolled Mg-Al and Mg-Zn alloy sheets by texture control: A review
Magnesium alloy sheets generally exhibit a strong basal texture, which leads to poor strength–ductility synergy, pronounced anisotropy, and insufficient formability. These drawbacks limit the large-scale industrial application of magnesium alloy sheets. The regulation of texture, especially in texture intensity and components, plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall mechanical performance of magnesium alloy sheets. Alloying (such as the addition of Ca, Zn, and rare earth elements), recrystallization mechanisms (including particle-stimulated nucleation, twin-induced recrystallization, and shear band-induced recrystallization), and grain boundary segregation can largely affect the texture of magnesium alloy sheets. In addition, rolling parameters such as rolling temperature, rolling speed, and rolling reduction, as well as special rolling techniques including cross rolling, differential speed rolling, and hard-plate rolling, can also significantly affect the texture intensity and texture components. This review systematically summarizes the research progress on the high-performance Mg-Al and Mg-Zn alloy sheets, focusing on: (1) the influence of texture on the mechanical properties and formability; (2) the influence of alloying, recrystallization mechanism and grain boundary segregation on texture; and (3) the influence of rolling processes on texture. It also provides an outlook on the future development of rolled magnesium alloy sheets with high strength–ductility synergy, low anisotropy and high formability.
