Development of the organizational trauma resilience-patient reported experience measure for people with HIV in the Southern United States.
Objective: People with HIV are disproportionately affected by psychological trauma, compared to people without HIV. Trauma-informed care has the potential to improve health outcomes, but limited evaluation tools have been validated for people with HIV.
Method: We developed the Organizational Trauma Resilience-Patient Reported Experience Measure through community engagement, cognitive interviews, readability testing, and classical test theory.
Results: The Organizational Trauma Resilience-Patient Reported Experience Measure is a 40-item index comprising two subscales, each containing three dimensions. All subscales were unidimensional and had excellent reliability (Organizational Credibility = .979 and Culturally Responsive Trauma Resilience = .975) and overall scale item consistency (validity; Organizational Credibility = .839; Culturally Responsive Trauma Resilience = .795). Convergent and discriminant validity were established, demonstrating how the instrument relates to other constructs.
Conclusions: Initial development of the Organizational Trauma Resilience-Patient Reported Experience Measure marks several novel contributions to the trauma-informed care knowledge base and is a first step toward measuring the extent to which people with HIV perceive their care environments to be safe, stable, and nurturing.
