Effect of Various Diet Types on the Health of Maxillomandibular Fixation Patients.
Objective: This study aims to determine the influence of diet on the physical and mental health of MMF patients.
Methodology: A clinical experiment was conducted from February 2020 to November 2022 in the maxillofacial surgery department of service hospital and a specialist maxillofacial surgery office in Sanandaj, Iran. This study involved 90 patients, ranging in age from 20 to 50 years old, who underwent MMF. The weights of the participants were measured before and after surgery. The levels of facial pain and chronic pain were assessed using the Macfarlane and Von Korff questionnaires, respectively. Additionally, the quality of life related to oral health and nutrition was evaluated using the OHIP-14 questionnaires.
Results: This study demonstrated that a standard liquid diet supplemented with nutritional additives could control pain intensity, improve the quality of life related to oral health and nutrition, and ultimately, manage weight loss. The relationships between diet type and weight loss level, pain intensity, and quality of life were significant (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Intervention and diet prescription (standard liquid + supplement) resulted in the improvement of all studied parameters compared to the non-intervention condition. Therefore, it is necessary for patients who undergo maxillofacial surgery to consult with nutrition specialists.
