Biochemical fingerprinting of dried blood serum from chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients by Raman spectroscopy: Towards prognostic classification
This study presents the application of micro-Raman spectroscopy to the serum of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) patients for prognostic assessment, building upon preliminary identification by conventional methods. This label-free, rapid vibrational technique reveals distinct biochemical signatures that differentiate favorable from unfavorable prognoses, surpassing insights obtainable through morphology or immunophenotyping alone. Key spectral variations, notably at 1652 and 1205 cm−1, linked to protein secondary structure and amino acid makeup, and the ratio between 1003 cm−1 (phenylalanine) and 1344 cm−1 (collagen) peaks, reflect metabolic changes correlating with disease progression. Integrating Raman spectra analysis with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial least squares (PLS) enabled accurate classification, highlighting micro-Raman’s innovative potential as a complementary prognostic tool for CLL despite the complexity of spectral interpretation.
期刊介绍:
Spectrochimica Acta, Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy (SAA) is an interdisciplinary journal which spans from basic to applied aspects of optical spectroscopy in chemistry, medicine, biology, and materials science.
The journal publishes original scientific papers that feature high-quality spectroscopic data and analysis. From the broad range of optical spectroscopies, the emphasis is on electronic, vibrational or rotational spectra of molecules, rather than on spectroscopy based on magnetic moments.
Criteria for publication in SAA are novelty, uniqueness, and outstanding quality. Routine applications of spectroscopic techniques and computational methods are not appropriate.
Topics of particular interest of Spectrochimica Acta Part A include, but are not limited to:
Spectroscopy and dynamics of bioanalytical, biomedical, environmental, and atmospheric sciences,
Novel experimental techniques or instrumentation for molecular spectroscopy,
Novel theoretical and computational methods,
Novel applications in photochemistry and photobiology,
Novel interpretational approaches as well as advances in data analysis based on electronic or vibrational spectroscopy.
