Effect of Cinnamomum verum L. on intestinal glucose absorption and its use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes
Cinnamomum verum is an aromatic plant widely used in daily life. Scientific work has shown that cinnamon has hypoglycemic properties and may be very beneficial in controlling blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes. In this work, we evaluated the inhibitory properties Cinnamomum verum aqueous extracts on intestinal glucose absorption and its antihyperglycemic effect in vitro using digestive functions enzymes, namely α-amylase and α-glucosidase, and we evaluated the subacute toxicity profiles of cinnamon extracts in rats through the approaches described in the guidelines of the OECD. The results show that the aqueous crude extract of cinnamon has no inhibitory effect on the second messenger, the Na+ /glucose cotransporter. Consequently, cinnamon has no effect on intestinal glucose absorption from an electrogenic point of view.

Industrial Crops and Products is an International Journal publishing academic and industrial research on industrial (defined as non-food/non-feed) crops and products. Papers concern both crop-oriented and bio-based materials from crops-oriented research, and should be of interest to an international audience, hypothesis driven, and where comparisons are made statistics performed.
