Mpox, a zoonotic orthopoxvirus, originally identified in 1958, exhibits two distinct genetic strains or clades, Clade 1 and Clade 2. Prior to 2022, mpox was predominantly isolated in the endemic regions of West and Central Africa. Sporadic outbreaks of travel-associated Clade 2 mpox had previously occurred in non-endemic areas, but persistent human-to-human transmission within non-endemic regions had not been documented until recently. In May 2022, a global mpox outbreak emerged, impacting over 100 countries worldwide. This prompted the World Health Organization to declare mpox a public health emergency of international concern.1.
