The morphology and life cycles of seven valid species with known merogonic stages (Hepatozoon americanum, H. canis, H. felis, H. martis, H. rufi, H. silvestris, H. ursi) are summarized in a table using standard terminology. Additional information on H. apri, H. martis, and H. silvestris life cycle stages is provided. Information lacking for H. procyonis, H. luiperdjie and H. ingwe is discussed. The relevance of H. mustelis, H. banethi and H. ewingi is discussed and they are considered as invalid species. For the benefit of future researchers, worldwide reports of prevalence, clinical disease, diagnosis, and treatment of Hepatozoon infections in domestic and wild Carnivora for the past century are summarized in tables alphabetically and chronologically for each country. Co-infections of H. canis, H. americanum, H. felis, and H. silvestris are summarized and discussed. Manuscripts published in this journal will be available to all worldwide, with no barriers to access, immediately following acceptance. Manuscripts on all aspects of the basic and applied biology of parasites, intermediate hosts, vectors and vector-borne pathogens will be considered. In addition to the traditional and well-established areas of science in these fields, we also aim to provide a vehicle for publication of the rapidly developing resources and technology in parasite, intermediate host and vector genomics and their impacts on biological research. We are able to publish large datasets and extensive results, frequently associated with genomic and post-genomic technologies, which are not readily accommodated in traditional journals. Manuscripts addressing broader issues, for example economics, social sciences and global climate change in relation to parasites, vectors and disease control, are also welcomed.
