Assessing the Effectiveness of Black Rice Bran Mouthwash in Modulating Saliva pH Among Children.
The prevalence of dental and oral problems in Indonesia is 57.6%. One of the most dominant dental and oral health problems in Indonesia is dental caries. Black rice contains many nutrients and bioactive compounds. The main compounds contained are anthocyanins, which are natural pigments and contain flavonoids that can act as antibacterial.
Purpose: To determine the differences in salivary pH in children before and after using black rice bran extract as a mouthwash.
Materials and methods: The type of research that is used is quasi-experimental with three group pretest-post test design. The sample of the research is 30 students. Each sample's will be measured for salivary pH before and after using black rice bran extract mouthwash, antiseptic mouthwash, and distilled water.
Results: For the group using black rice bran extract as a mouthwash the average salivary pH before rinsing with black rice bran extract mouthwash there was a significant effect on the pH value of saliva before and after using black rice bran extract mouthwash.
Conclusion: In this study, it was found that gargling using black rice bran extract mouthwash can affect the pH of saliva in the oral cavity. The effect can be seen from the initial average salivary pH of 6.6 (acidic) and changes in salivary pH after using mouthwash to 7.3 (normal). This indicates a change in salivary pH in a stable direction from acidic conditions to normal conditions.
