Novel use of the veress needle for percutaneous retrograde ureteral access after Cohen reimplantation in children.
Retrograde ureteral access after Cohen reimplantation can be difficult. Previously described percutaneous techniques used small caliber suprapubic needles or antegrade access. We describe a percutaneous suprapubic access using the Veress needle, which was inserted into the bladder superolateral to the target ureteral orifice under cystoscopic guidance. Ureteral catheters for retrograde studies and double J stents could be directly inserted into the ureter through the Veress needle sheath under cystoscopic and fluoroscopic guidance. The technique is simple and quick and was used by us successfully in 3 children. If needed, the tract can be dilated for insertion of flexible ureteroscope.
