Grandmothers' experience of caregiving to grandchildren while at their children's residence: Analyzing urban Indian families
Objective
This study analyzed the lived experience of Indian grandmothers and attempted to understand their perspectives on grandparenting responsibilities while they temporarily relocated to the city of their children's residence within India to care for grandchildren aged 0 to 5 years.
Background
Parents from nuclear families seek help from their parents to take care of their young children, even if they have moved to a new location.
Method
A purposive sample of 60 grandmothers who relocated to provide grandchild care were interviewed using a semistructured questionnaire.
Results
The content analysis of qualitative data yielded five key themes: (a) concern about physical and mental health issues due to grandchild care; (b) perceived relevance of grandmothers in strengthening family bonds; (c) role in taking care of food, nutrition, health, and hygiene of grandchildren; (d) helping adult children, especially daughters, continue their careers and avoid financial difficulties by providing care to grandchildren; and (e) grandmothers' expectations of additional physical support and recognition for their contributions.
Conclusion
Grandmothers are happy to contribute to grandchild care. However, relocation to a different city makes this more stressful than taking care of grandchildren while remaining in one's own place of residence.
Implications
Meeting grandmothers' expectations through healthy family relations and the provision of additional support can improve the grandparenting experience and ensure active and healthy aging.
