Reaction of 2,9-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline with secondary amines as a convenient approach to a new class of promising ligands
Nucleophilic substitution of the chlorine atoms in 2,9-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline with secondary amines was studied. This reaction provides mono- and bis-substituted amines, including unsymmetrical compounds with two different moieties of secondary amines, in 97–99% yields. The product composition depends on the reaction temperature, solvent nature, and the amount of amine used. Symmetrical bisamine bearing the morpholine moieties was used as a starting material to synthesize complexes with AgNO3 and HgCl2.
