Introduction

The aim of this study was to evaluate the appropriateness of intravenous iron prescribing in our hospital setting before and after an educational campaign.

Results

Over two distinct periods (2021 and 2022), 239 prescriptions were analyzed. The primary indications were anemia and/or iron deficiency (83%) and blood management (13%). Compliance rates by indication were higher after the educational campaign (96 versus 95%), with fewer pharmaceutical interventions (4 versus 7), though there were no significant differences. However, compliance by length of stay was significantly higher before the educational campaign (79 versus 67%).

Conclusion

Compared to previous studies on the subject, the level of prescription compliance was high, including prior to the educational campaign. The campaign appeared to impact compliance by indication, but not by length of stay. A larger study would be required to confirm these results.
