["I overcame hurdles as a mother": Care and intersectionalities in motherhood among disabled women].
The scope of this article was to comprehend discourses and attitudes that permeate care relationships in the reproductive journeys of women with physical disabilities. The qualitative research, conducted in the metropolitan area of João Pessoa-PB, was based on ethnography, interviews, and biographical accounts of 14 female interlocutors between 26 and 54 years of age. The theoretical-analytical framework was anchored in the intersectional perspectives of care studies and disability studies, considering gender, class, and disability oppressions. The narratives revealed specific vulnerabilities in the experience of seeking care throughout pregnancy and motherhood, driven by gender conventions and structural ableism, exacerbated by unfavorable class conditions. This influenced how these women are approached by healthcare professionals and individuals close to them, becoming targets of socially pervasive biomedical risk discourses. In relationships involving the direct and indirect care of their children, inequities related to the division of intrafamily responsibilities, gaps in social policies, and difficulties in support networks were observed, resulting in multiple burdens that negatively impact health.
