Technological, regulatory and strategic framework for biogas and biomethane injection into natural gas transportation systems in the European Union
This paper gives an overview of the European biogas and biomethane market’s current conditions, concerning topics like current and future production and consumption dynamics, as well as the legal, regulatory, and policy frameworks in place in the EU. The research objective was the technical issues concerning gas quality requirements for integrating biogas and biomethane with the existing transport systems. Based on the research, this paper aims to provide a thorough opportunity and conditions evaluation of the EU biogas and biomethane sector’s development due to current legislation. The market environment, including possible supply and demand, producer support programs, and the legislation for the production, distribution, and transport of biogas and biomethane, were all considered during the research. Technological problems of injecting biogas into the gas transport system, like issues of the composition of biogas and biomethane, were identified as among the main technical, economic, and regulatory obstacles to the development of the biomethane market.
