Phylogenetic analysis confirms the species' taxonomic classification in the section <i>Talauma</i> (Juss.) Baill 1866 and its close relationship to <i>Magnolia gilbertoi</i> (Lozano) Govaerts 1996 from Colombia, which belongs to the same section.
